"All enduring love affairs must ultimately capture the heart, the soul and the imagination. For me, Hurling does that better than any other sport."

Eamon O'Shea, All-Ireland Winning Coach with Tipperary

OUR (FERGAL AND PADRAIG MCDONNELL'S) BELOVED GRANDMOTHER, WHOSE BOOK, "MEITHEALS & MEANDERINGS" DETAILED HER CHILDHOOD IN 1920'S IRELAND...

...used to always extol the benefits of drawing from one's own personal experiences. Live by the principles and beliefs you personally feel deep down in your core, she would simultaneously advise us. As evidenced in this website's Q&A section, sport has been hugely influential with respect to the formulation of our individual and collective value systems, with Hurling playing the biggest role of any and all.

BORN INTO THE NORTH TIPPERARY SENIOR CLUB WITH VIRTUALLY THE SMALLEST PLAYING NUMBERS...

...our selfless coaches raised us to believe that bigger doesn’t mean better. An underdog will slay a giant if he innovates, sacrifices and believes, we were repeatedly told. Inspired by the nerve and verve of these mentors, a golden generation of Burgess hurlers would emerge, and go on to experience unprecedented club success. Blessed to be part of that generation, the aforementioned ideology was immediately adopted by Tailteann upon incorporation, with it continuing to dictate the business and design decisions we make a decade on.

AS WE MATURED...

...the club’s boardroom activities fascinated us as much as the on-field ones. The club’s modus operandi mirrored an S.M.E in many ways, and being privy to such as teenagers helped to greatly fast-forward our appreciation of real world processes, politics and protocols. It was however the sense of identity and purpose the club’s officers successfully transmitted to their deputies that left the greatest mark upon us – they knew he who had a why would endure pretty much any how.

IN HIS MID TWENTIES, FERGAL STARTED TO...

...undertake coaching roles in a bid to give back to an organisation that gave him so much. He was to quickly realise that when one teaches, two learn. Becoming aware of the direct link between high performance and a culture of continuous improvement, authenticity, humility, loyalty, open communication, and accountability was, for example, an incredibly valuable lesson for an aspiring entrepreneur such as himself to learn. Rather critically, coaching also taught Fergal that life always points, and is directed, to someone or something other than oneself, which became a huge influence on Tailteann’s overall strategy.

AND YET FOR ALL THE SERIOUS LIFE-LESSONS HURLING TAUGHT US...

...the most significant one was the first thing said to us at training on Day 1: "Just be yourself, and have fun".
